The Benefits of Using Synthetic Motor Oil
Published on September 17th, 2022 by SearchForParts.com
There are many benefits of using synthetic oil and we will present information to show why it is better. There is even a cost-benefit that we will get into later. Many people will tell you “I am just going to go to the local retailer and get the cheapest oil and change it every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.” I am sure you have heard a friend or family member state that. But is it good for your car? It may be cheaper in the short term but is it cheaper in the long run?
Is Synthetic Oil Worth the Cost?
If it is a full synthetic that lasts 15,000 miles or up to one year, then yes, absolutely! It will definitely protect your engine and reduce wear and tear which means fewer repairs in the long term, especially if you plan on keeping your car or vehicle for a while. Even if you don’t keep your vehicle for years and like to change cars frequently, you can at least show you maintained the vehicle properly with a full synthetic (more on that later) which will result in a higher selling price or at least prevent or limit the person buying from asking a price cut for a specific reason.
Let’s take an example of your basic cheap oil change for this example, it cost $30 for an ok synthetic for 5 quarts and around $30 at least for the labor to change it. This basic conventional oil change, whether it is a synthetic blend or cheap synthetic, will last for several months, let’s say 4 months resulting in 3 oil changes per year. That is $180 plus all the wear and tear, the oil failed to protect your engine from. How about all the time wasted as well waiting for the oil change, that has to be worth something to you as well.
Now a top oil that is lab tested with a special formula to avoid breakdown with additives for superior protection will cost more than double, around 5 quarts let’s say for $80 but it lasts up to 15,000 miles or up to 1 year! You take this oil to a local mechanic and pay the same $30 labor. These are just rough numbers but we are just trying to get an idea of the comparison by crunching these numbers for a regular or synthetic oil change vs. getting something even better and taking it to a mechanic. So that is 80 and 30 which is $110. That is still cheaper than the unknown oil that is pumped down from the ceiling at the fast lube shop which does an ok job keeping your engine running well and if you do it yourself then even better! So when people say “Nah, synthetic is too expensive”, well yes, upfront it may seem that way but in the long run you win because your engine will be maintained well and you will save time/money from frequent oil changes.

My car does not need a synthetic oil. Can I change from conventional motor oil to a fully synthetic motor oil?
Yes, there is nothing wrong with doing this and you will most likely benefit from extra protection from heat, wear and tear and your engine will be much more cleaner.
