What Type of Oil Does a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Take?
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 2.5L engine requires 0W-16 oil. However, if 0W-16 is unavailable, 0W-20 oil is a temporary option. It would be best if you reverted to 0W-16 oil for your following oil change. It has a capacity of 4.8 quarts.
Oil and other fluids in the car play an essential role in optimal performance. Most modern cars use synthetic oil for its low viscosity. This oil is better for your Toyota RAV4 in terms of cleanliness and performance. However, conventional oil comes from crude oil and may include contaminants and other impurities. Concerns about the oil’s hydrogen and carbon concentration raise severe environmental concerns.

Difference between 0W-16 and 0W-20 oil
Most current cars, like the 2021 Toyota RAV4, require multi-grade oil grades 0W-16 or 0W-20. These gradings represent the viscosity and thickness of the oil.
The significant difference between 0W-16 and 0W-20 oil is that the former has low viscosity and a higher fuel economy than the other oil. However, the thinness of the oil may cause increased wear or even increased oil consumption in some instances. Also, when it comes to hot temperatures/environments, 0w-20 has proven to be more effective.
Is it ok to change from 0W-16 to 0W-20?
You can change from 0w-16 to 0W-20 oil and vice-versa. However, we recommend always consulting the owner’s manual for accurate information on suitable oil types.
In addition, the American Petroleum Institute (API) recognizes 0W-16 and 0w-20 as suitable oil for the 2021 Toyota RAV4. Also, make sure you are using a full synthetic and not a blend for maximum protection. Some oils claim to be synthetic but they are not 100% because they mix in regular oil.
If you must change to 0W-20 oil, revert to 0W-16 in the following oil change as recommended by the Toyota manufacturer.
How Often to Change an Engine Oil Filter in 2021 Toyota Rav4?

How to change the oil in your 2021 Toyota Rav4?
Supplies required are:
- Synthetic oil fitting manufacturer specifications
- Lift or jack and jack stands
- Oil filter fitting manufacturer specifications
- Drain pan
- Oil filter wrench
- 15mm socket
- Funnel
- ⅜” ratchet
- 15mm wrench
Start the engine and let it warm up.
Start the car so the oil can flow more smoothly by warming it up. You can switch the engine off after the temperature has returned to normal.
Secure the car.
Put your car on jack stands and raise them to a safe height. First, ensure your car is safely parked before you go beneath it.
Remove the old oil
Position the oil drain pipe below the drain pan. To release the Oil Filter Housing Drain Bolt, loosen it using the 3/8″ ratchet. First, you should tilt the drain pipe to one side to let the oil drain out of the filter, and then you may pull the drain pipe out.
You should use caution since the oil can be hot.
Remove the filter
To remove the oil filter housing’s bolts:
- Connect the oil filter wrench to the 3/8″ ratchet and extension.
- Take out the used cartridge from the engine’s oil filter.
- Drain any oil that may still be present.
Replace the oil filter with a new one.
When replacing filters, slide the new one into the filter housing and peel off the old o-ring. Replace the old filter with a new one from the set.
After replacing the o-ring on the drain bolt, reattach the filter housing to the engine. Replace the drain bolt with the help of the ratchet.
Replace the engine oil.
Using a funnel, carefully pour the appropriate grade of Amsoil synthetic oil (as specified in the owner’s handbook) into the engine via the oil filler cap.
Check for leaks by turning the fill cap snugly and running the engine for a few minutes.
Turn off the engine and inspect the oil level.
Stop the vehicle and examine the oil level using the dipstick. Add extra oil if it’s not exactly in the middle of the two marks.
Reset the oil change notification.
You may access the gear selection menu without turning on the ignition by turning the key to the “on” position. Move the cursor to “vehicle settings,” and keep the OK button depressed until you reach that menu.
Click the OK button twice and then choose “scheduled maintenance.” A new oil life estimate displays if “yes” is selected.
A Few Last Words!
Using high-quality oil is one of the best approaches to improving the longevity and efficiency of your 2021 Toyota RAV4. Synthetic oils like Amsoil provide the needed protection for your engine. We recommend you have an oil change 3,000 to 10,000 miles depending on the oil kind you use.
