How often and when do you have an oil change in your Ford F-150 Pickup truck?

So, now that you know the oil capacity of the F-150, how do you know when to have an oil change and how often to do so?

Ford manufacturers have recommended that Ford owners have an oil change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles for synthetic oil use, and 3,500 to 5000 miles for conventional oil. It is also important to note that your driving habits and the terrain will influence how often to have an oil change.

When it comes to when to have an oil change, your vehicle will show signs that let you know it is time for an oil change. It is a good idea to pay attention to these signs. They include

Dark and Dirty oil

Clean oils are usually amber and translucent. Over time, as they are passed across the engine, they collect dirt and become darker. This sign isn’t the most obvious and you must be very vigilant to notice it. We recommend checking your engine oil at least once a month by removing the dipstick and inspecting the oil color.

Dark Exhaust smoke

It is normal to notice a translucent vapor from your truck tailpipe, but if you notice darker smoke from your exhaust pipe, it may be time to have an oil change. The dark smoke indicates that the oil has broken down because of the heat generated by the engine.

Increased Mileage

If you notice a gradual increase in your truck mileage without a significant change in driving conditions or terrain, it may indicate that you need an oil change urgently. It is important to change your oil every 3,000 to 10,000 miles or every 6 months depending on which comes first.

Knocking  sound

If you hear a knocking sound from your engine then something is definitely wrong. It could be a result of low oil in the vehicle. Oil provides an extra layer of protection against friction. As your truck runs low on oil,  the layer becomes thinner and the engine parts begin to rub against each other.

Check engine light/oil change warning light

This is the most obvious sign that you need your truck oil changed. When you spot the oil change light indicator, along with the check engine light the first thing to do is to check the oil level. If it is low then it may be the cause of the warning light you see on the dashboard.

How to change the oil in a Ford F150

Tools for an oil change

  1. Oil filter wrench
  2. Drain pan
  3. Amsoil 5W-30 synthetic oil
  4. New oil filters
  5. A paper towel
  6. Pair of gloves
  7. 15mm wrench

Step 1: The first step is to remove the oil cap of the engine. This allows you to better drain all the oil from your truck.

Step 2: Check the oil cap for the manufacturer’s recommended oil type. It is written boldly on the cap.

Step 3: Using your 15 mm wrench locate the oil drain plug and untie it. The drain plug is located under the truck. Make sure you have your drain pipe with you to avoid making a mess.

Step 4: Once the oil is completely drained, reinstall the drain plug and tighten it with your hands. Use the wrench to make sure it is well sealed.

Step 5: Move to the oil filter. Remove the splash shield so that you can easily access the oil filter. In order to drain the filter, remove the rubber seal. Begin to unscrew the oil filter. The oil should drain, as you remove the filter.

Step 5: Once the oil is completely drained, replace the rubber seal and fix a new oil filter on the truck. Before then make sure to double-check that all the old seal was completely removed before fixing the new filter. If not, the filter will not be properly sealed.

What happens if you put in the wrong type of oil?

Using the wrong oil for your F-150 engine should be avoided. It can lead to costly repair and in worse cases knock the truck’s engine.

For instance, engine oil meant for diesel vehicles can introduce contaminants into the engine. This will result in overheating and stalling of the engine. It can also result in excessive friction in the engine.
