What Type of Oil Does a Freightliner Cascadia Need?

Updated April 12, 2024 by SearchForParts.com

The Cascadias come with so many different possible engines such as the Caterpillar C15 14.6L, Cummins ISX, Detroit Diesel 60 Series 14.0L, Detroit Diesel DD15, Detroit Diesel DD13 12.8L, DD16 15.6L, or the 14.8L Mercedes-Benz MBE4000 12.8L. In our personal experience when assisting customers, the variety of so many engines available can get a bit confusing when looking for a compatible oil and filter to protect your Freightliner. Some years may have a different engine as well.

For example, the 2013 may have a DD15 instead of a DD13 (we searched and found that this is possible since some are for sale with this engine type). Since we want to avoid any confusion when searching for the type of oil you need by year, we will list the oil needed by engine below and give you tips and ways to search for the exact engine. Our team has made it easy for you to find resources to look up your engine type, oil, and a compatible filter! We hope you find this helpful since everything you need to know is here to find out how to discover what kind of engine you have (we have a video link below).

If you have a Detroit Diesel DD15 14.8L then the oil weight needed is 10W-30. If you are not sure what kind of engine you have then you can search the owner’s manual online using the link below which will take you to the Cummins site with instructions or the Detroit Diesel instructions below on how to find the engine type on the data plate.

Upgrade your oil to the best synthetic and protect your engine for years!

To avoid buying the wrong oil since engines vary we found a few tips or tricks to verify what kind of engine is in your Freighliner.

You can check your owner’s manual or use the VIN number and look up your engine using either https://www.faxvin.com/vin-decoder or https://driving-tests.org/vin-decoder/ before purchasing. This makes it much easier and has no guesswork. After searching your engine with the VIN, you can now buy one of the following oils and help protect your engine with a high quality made in the U.S.A. synthetic! If this does not work we have another option, see below for either the Cummins or DD instructions to find out what engine you have.
