What Type of Oil Does a 2009 Toyota Camry Need?

Updated January 15th, 2023 by Searchforparts.com

The type of oil for the 2009 Camry is based on the engine size. If you have a 2.4L (4-cylinder engine), your engine requires 0W-20 or 5W-20 oil with 0w-20 being the best choice for fuel economy. If you have a 3.5L (6-cylinder engine), your engine requires 5W-30, but 10W-30 may be used temporarily, and replacing it with 5W-30 is recommended for the next oil change.

We verified this information from Toyota. (Source: 2009 Toyota Owner’s Manual) since, in our experience, this is the most trustworthy source of information. Unfortunately many sites post inaccurate and/or conflicting information when it comes to oil type and capacity for your vehicle.

Need a tough oil to last and protect your engine? Get our Signature Series Oil and pair it up with our filter below and run your engine up to 15,000 miles or 1 year. This saves time and money! Also protects better than other major brands. Fully 100% synthetic and not a blend.

Get tough oil and keep your engine out of the repair shop! Upgrade now! We have used this oil and tested it in an older Camry and the oil consumption was significantly reduced! This tells us that this oil is very rugged and must be true for all vehicles!

How much oil does a 2009 Camry need?

The oil capacity depends on the size of the engine. The 4-cylinder will need 4.5 quarts of oil and the 6-cylinder will need 6.4 quarts of oil. Get an extra quart or two to keep handy in case the engine consumes oil. There are certain reasons why an engine may burn or consume oil other than a leak so it is a good idea to keep an extra quart or two. Check the oil level frequently to keep an eye on the oil level. Using a top quality synthetic may reduce the amount of oil consumed.

Does the 2009 Toyota Camry burn oil? Why does my engine consume oil when there is no leak?

Some engines just happen to burn a bit of oil with no leak. In our personal experience in some of the vehicles we have owned (one being an older Camry), the engine just burns oil because, well, it is just an oil burner and not because of a leak. One of our Camrys would literally burn a quart a month and after switching to a better oil (synthetic), the consumption dropped to 1 quart every three months. Also, the amount of engine oil consumed depends on the oil viscosity, oil quality, and how the vehicle is driven. Increased oil consumption may happen under driving conditions such as high speeds and frequent acceleration/deceleration. Buying a top-quality oil may help oil consumption. Always check the oil level often to prevent destroying your engine. It is hard to repair an engine that has been damaged because of running without oil. Please make sure with a certified mechanic that there is no leak in the engine. If a leak is ruled out then trying a high quality oil may reduce the burning of oil.

How can I change the oil in a 2009 Camry myself?

By doing it yourself you get to choose your preferred oil and not be stuck with whatever the dealership or quick lube shop has to offer. You also save money. Here is a good video on YouTube.

What if I do not want to change my own oil but want to put in my preferred oil to increase the oil change interval?

Great question. Some people have stated to us that the dealer will only put their own authorized or preferred brand when there are better oils out there on the market. You can use Google to search for a local mechanic shop and take your own oil and oil filter and just pay the labor and disposal fee. In the rare case that a local mechanic refuses to put in the oil of your choice, then continue to search for someone who will.

Can I use 5W-30 in my 2009 Toyota Camry?

According to the owner’s manual, you  may use 5W-30 only if you have the 3.5L (6-cylinder engine). You may temporarily replace this oil with 10W-30 but the next oil change should revert back to 5W-30. We can only guess the reason that this is stated is if in an emergency 5W-30 is not available, 10W-30 can be used in an emergency but it is not the recommended oil for the 6-cylinder engine.
