In 1983, I wrote a testimonial on my 1969 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup with a 396 engine. At that time, it had 400,000 miles plus the heads and pan had never been removed. I had adjusted the tappets at about 250,000 miles and soon after 400,000 I adjusted the tappets again. This pickup was used as our main vehicle between our two farms which are 76 miles apart. During the summer of 1988 our hired man lost control and rolled it two or three times. It was totally destroyed except for the engine, transmission and differential. At the time it was wrecked it was using a quart of oil between 7,000 and 8,000 miles.

On August 23, 1989, I decided to replace a diesel engine in our 1983 3/4 ton Chevy pickup with a gas engine. After visiting Kevin Arnet, owner of A & A Auto Center in Liberal, Arkansas, we decided to use the 396 engine from the wrecked pickup as this engine is a very strong and hot engine and should do the job well.

This engine has 535,372 total miles on it with the last 447,372 with AMSOIL 10W-40. The AMSOIL was changed once a year early in the spring. Since this engine had this many miles on it, we decided it should be opened up and repaired and replace what was needed. If we had known the condition of the inside working parts, we probably would have used it as it was. Since we had it opened, we did go ahead and replace some parts and renew the engine.

Without a doubt, the 100 percent AMSOIL Lifetime Air Filter and the By-Pass Oil Filter get all the credit. There were 18 oil changes during this time.

I'm looking for another 300,000 to 400,000 miles out of this engine.

When we took this 396 Chevrolet engine apart, it was in the best condition of any engine I have ever seen. It looked like it had about 80,000 miles instead of over 500,000.

The bearings were not even worn to the brass and the rings were not worn out and it was clean inside, no sludge or carbon at all...It had .0007 - .0009 taper, which is less than engines with 70,000 to 80,000 miles usually have.

All in all I was impressed with the wear and cleanliness of this engine and the mileage it had on it.
